About Us

Medullary Ray Furniture Ltd.

We are a growing family business with over 26 years’ experience in the design and making of bespoke furniture, interiors, kitchens, bedrooms, studies and freestanding hand-made furniture. We use a broad range of styles and finishes to create traditional, contemporary and modern items, so we are able to cater for all tastes.

Based between the city of Salisbury and the village of Landford and within the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, we are not far from the M27, M3, A31 and A36 and are easy to find if you’d like to visit us (by appointment please!).

From painted furniture, painted kitchens, studies and bedrooms through to French polished dining suites, we pride ourselves on being a specialist firm of bespoke furniture makers, covering everything from conception of ideas through to final design, creation and installation.

We use some of the best bespoke craftsmen available: cabinet makers, professional furniture installers, wood turners, polishers, painters, interior designers and builders, so you can create your dream interior.

Furniture defines a space both in terms of its function and its form. Balancing these two considerations is a key requirement in good design and it is a challenge that Medullary Ray Furniture enjoys every day.

What are Medullary Rays?

“Medullary” is closely related to the modern day word for “middle”.

Medullary rays are the lines that run perpendicular to the growth rings radiating outward from the pith. These rays vaguely resemble sunlight and are present in all trees, but most prominent in oaks.

When the tree is growing, the purpose of the medullary rays is to transport nutrition between the centre of the trunk and the outer parts.

Technically, medullary rays are always present, but become most apparent on quartersawn surfaces (when a log is cut into quarters lengthwise along its axis, parallel to the rays that run from the centre).

Medullary rays are also known as ray flecks, or ray flakes.
